Panama Canal Does Not Plan Transit Restrictions Until at Least April

FREIGHT

The Panama Canal does not see a need for further vessel transit restrictions until at least April, when its authority will evaluate water levels at the end of the dry season, according to Reuters.

  • 24 authorised transits per day will be maintained until at least April, with the potential to increase slots progressively up to the normal 36 transits if sufficient rains arrive in May.
  • If rains are below expectation, transits could be limited further.
  • A severe drought over the past year forced the canal to limit the number of vessels passing per day.
  • However, rains in Q4 allowed the additional restrictions planned for January to be suspended.
  • Demand for transits via the Panama Canal have increased amid chaos in the Red Sea, Reuters said.
