Partisan Acrimony To Increase As GOP Prepares To Open Biden Admin Probes

Partisan conflict in US politics is set to increase as the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, led by new House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), prepares to today launch a congressional probe into the Biden Administration's alleged "weaponisation of government."

  • The panel, seen by Democrats as a "tit-for-tat" response to the Democrat dominated January 6 Committee, will be headed by right-wing House Freedom Caucus founding member Jim Jordan (R-OK) and is part of a promise made by McCarthy to conservative Republicans in return for votes on the speaker's ballot.
  • Politico writes that, the panel, which will authorise Congressional Republicans to look into "any government agency or program that it views as suspect, including the FBI, IRS and the intelligence community," is likely to further inflame tensions between the GOP and Justice Department which will move to protect sensitive ongoing investigations.
  • Daniel Richman, a Columbia University law professor, said: “The committee has been given a ridiculously broad remit that, when invoked for partisan gain — as one can confidently predict — will surely lead to extensive conflict with the Justice Department and the president."
