PAS Turns Away From UMNO To Contest Melaka Election Under PN Banner

The leaders of Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) confirmed over the weekend that the party will contest the upcoming Melaka state election under the banner of Perikatan Nasional. PAS President Hadi said that the party will use Perikatan Nasional logo and instruct its members and voters to support candidates fielded by the coalition.

  • PAS leaders said that they had no choice other than run against Barisan Nasional, who decided to contest all 28 seats in the state legislature.
  • PAS and UMNO are the largest Malay/Muslim parties in Malaysia. They collaborate under the Muafakat Nasional pact, despite formally belonging to separate federal coalitions - Perikatan Nasional and Barisan Nasional respectively.
  • PAS President noted that the party has no intention to leave Muafakat Nasional and remains open to cooperation with UMNO during next year's federal election.
