Pavel Backs Further Military Aid and Future NATO/EU Membership For Ukraine

CZECHIA

President-elect Petr Pavel confirmed his hawkish views on China and Russia in the latest interview with Blooomberg, signalling a departure from the policies of outgoing President Milos Zeman.

  • The former NATO general said that Ukrainian forces are capable of defeating Russia and the only limit on military aid from the West should be the threat of nuclear escalation or direct NATO involvement.
  • At the same time, he noted that Russia is not the only country with nuclear weapons. The President-elect warned that "we have nuclear capability as well. We don't want to use it at all, but we are ready if necessary."
  • Pavel reiterated his view that Ukraine should be admitted to NATO and the EU once the war is over.
  • He said that EU-China relations should be based on mutual respect and it is "not in our interest to be pushed by China."
