Pentagon Press Secretary Brig Gen Pat Ryder has told reporters that the US has revised its plans to transfer advanced M1-A2 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, and will instead transfer refurbished M1-A1 Abrams tanks based upon hulls in US inventory.
- Ryder says the move will "significantly expedite" the delivery of the tanks to Ukraine and will be transferred to Ukraine by Autumn this year rather than an expected delivery time of over a year for the A2 variant.
- Although the A1 model is less advanced than the A2, the delivery of advanced battle tanks may increase the prospect of a successful Ukrainian counterattack in the Autumn.
- Ryder also confirms that Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley will testify Thursday to Senate Appropriations Committee on President Biden's Fiscal Year 2024 budget request.
