PM Andersson Only Party Leader With Positive Approval Rating: Sifo Poll

SWEDEN

Latest party leader approval polling from Sifo shows Prime Minister and leader of the centre-left Social Democrats Magdalena Andersson as the only party head in Sweden with a positive net approval rating.

  • Net Approval rating poll: Andersson (Social Democrats): +29, Dadgostar (Left, V): -7, Kristersson (Moderates, M): -13, Akesson (Sweden Democrats, SD): -26, Loof (Centre, C): -27, Busch (Christian Democrats, KD): -31, Stenevi (Greens, MP): -45, Bolund (Greens, MP): -48, Sabuni (Liberals, L): -49

  • The strong polling for Andersson could come under pressure in the months ahead. She remains in the polling 'honeymoon period' following her succession from former PM Stefan Lofven in November 2021. Her Social Democrats sit as a minority gov't, with just 100 of the 349 seats in parliament making the passing of legislation or enacting of a policy agenda a difficult affair requiring deals to be reached with non-governmental parties.
  • There are still nine months to go until the general election, taking place 11 September, meaning that there remains a significant amount of time for public support to shift. Should the gov'ts minority status hinder its ability to combat the pandemic or ease the cost of living crisis in Sweden it could result in a sharp drop in support for the governning party.
