PM Criticises MEP Vote On Hungary Council Presidency

POLAND

Speaking at the European Political Community summit in Moldova, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has criticised today's vote in the European Parliament earlier today in which MEPs passed a non-binding resolution raising concerns about Hungary taking the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union in H224.

  • Morawiecki stated that the the calls for Hungary not to take up the presidency was a 'clear violation of EU rules'.
  • The impact of the vote will be watched closely in Warsaw, given that Poland is set to follow Hungary in taking the rotating presidency in H125. As is the case with Hungary, Poland is also subject to 'Article 7' proceedings from the EU regarding perceived breaches of rule of law standards.
  • While Poland is subject to scrutiny from the EU regarding the politicisation of the country's judiciary, relations between Warsaw and Brussels are better than those with Budapest. This is seen as largely due to Poland's early and vocal support for backing Ukraine in its defence against Russian invasion in contrast to Hungary's lukewarm response and obstructionist stance on sanctions.
