PM Morawiecki To Attend EU Summit, Unemployment Data Eyed

  • Poland's EU Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sek outlined the government's priorities for today's European Council summit in Brussels. He noted that Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki will be trying to convince his peers to greenlight(1) extending the duration of sanctions on Russia before they need to be renewed (to a year from the current half a year), (2) granting Poland more funds for handling immigration amid the influx of Ukrainian refugees, (3) allocating more EU funds for military purposes, including training Ukrainian troops, and (4) improving the bloc's economic competitiveness, including in Central and Eastern Europe.
  • Head of the ruling Law and Justice's parliamentary caucus said that October 15 seems like a "very good" date for a general election, adding that his party will aim to govern alone. He refused to say if he held any coalition talks with lawmakers from the centre-right agrarian PSL party or the far-right Confederation.
  • Poland will today publish February unemployment rate at 09:00GMT/10:00CET.
