PM Says 'Nothing Decided' On Reshuffle That Could Presage Election

JAPAN

Wires carrying comments from Japanese PM Fumio Kishida stating that "nothing has been decided" regarding a mooted cabinet reshuffle "at the moment." Comes in the wake of a Yomiuri Shimbun storyreporting that the PM could shake up his ministerial team in the first half of September. The first half of September would allow Kishida to take part in a trilateral meeting with US and South Korean leaders in late August and the UNGA in late September.

  • Speculation of a Cabinet reshuffle has mounted in recent weeks as approval ratings for Kishida and his ministers continues to sink. Taro Kono - the main challenger to Kishida in the 2021 LDP leadership election who as Digital Transformation Minister is in charge of the controversial 'My Number' ID card system is seen as vulnerable.
  • Should a reshuffle result in a rebound in approval ratings, it could presage an autumn dissolution of parliament and snap general election. Yomirui Shimbun: "Plans are afoot within the government and LDP to convene an extraordinary Diet session in early October and to submit a supplementary budget for the current fiscal year aimed at addressing high prices and other issues"
