PM Spksman: EU Effectively Ended Talks, No Point If EU Won't Change Position

UK

PM's spokesman James Slack on Brexit talks: "The trade talks are over: the EU have effectively ended them by saying that they do not want to change their negotiating position. There is no point in trade talks if the EU doesn't change its position. The EU effectively ended the trade talks yesterday. Only if the EU fundamentally changes its position, will it be worth talking."

  • Says that EU negotiator Barnier should only come to London next week if he is prepared to talk about all issues on the basis of legal text, otherwise there is no reason for the talks to occur.
  • These comments are much stronger than those from the PM himself earlier with regard to future talks, but nevertheless, they do not close the door on discussions. UK gov't clearly trying to ratchet up pressure on EU, and EU doing vice versa.
