PM Suga: Japan Wants French Collaboration On Indo-Pacific Issues

In comments coming across wires and social media, outgoing Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga states that he wants to see French collaboration with Japan on issues relating to the Indo-Pacific.

  • Comes amid an ongoing spat between France and Australia over a cancelled submarine deal. This has seen concern rise among Western nations that France (with a large armed forces) could play a reduced role in countering Chinese military activity in the far East.
  • Suga also states that the continued expansion of China's armed forces could pose a threat to the Japanese economy.
  • Comes as Suga prepares for the first in-person 'Quad' summit on Friday in the US alongside President Biden, Indian PM Narendra Modi and Australian PM Scott Morrison. The Quad seen as crucial future security axis intended to counter Chinese military activity in the Indo-Pacific.
