PM  Suga's Approval Rating Hits New Low: Kyodo

JAPAN

Japan's Kyodo News reporting that Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's approval rating has hit an all-time low, while a significant majority of respondents state that they do not want him to remain in position as head of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) ahead of the autumn general election.

  • Suga's approval rating fell 4.1% in a month to 31.8% (the lowest on record), while his disapproval ratings rose by 0.8% to 50.6% (the highest since September 2020).
  • The poll also showed 65.1% of respondents stating that Suga should not remain as head of the LDP. The party is set to make a decision on its leader at the end of September, when Suga's term is up. If he is not re-elected as party head, it will be a new individual that runs as the party's candidate for prime minister in the legislative election.
