PM Sunak, VdL Outline 'Windsor Framework'

EU-UK

UK PM Rishi Sunak outlines the 'Windsor Framework' of the Northern Ireland protocol. Highlights three main areas of progress:

  1. The deal delivers a green lane/red lane trade route system to make trade flows easier from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.
  2. UK takes control of VAT via treaty text change. Pet travel and medicines requirements are also removed. Sunak says this agreement has 'removed any sense of a border in the Irish Sea.'
  3. Sunak says that the deal ensures sovereignty for NI as part of the UK. Says there will be a 'Stormont brake' that will allow the Northern Ireland assembly to stop EU laws applying in Northern Ireland. Says that if the Stormont brake is pulled, the UK gov't will have a veto.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen: 'New framework allows us to begin a new chapter...we are confident this deal will work for all...new arrangements are delivering comprehensive package....we have agreed on strong safeguards that will protect the integrity of the EU's Single Market...the framework respects our markets and legitimate interests...and the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement.'
