PM: 'We Will Comply With Whatever They [The Electoral Commission] Want'

UK

Prime Minister Boris Johnson in latest pool clip, when asked about Electoral Commission investigation into the funding of redecoration of his Downing St. flat says that, "We will comply with whatever they [the Electoral Commission] want and I don't think there's anything to see here or to worry about."

  • There are myriad potential outcomes to the investigation, ranging from the Conservative Party being fully acquitted of any wrongdoing, through to the case being passed to the police if the investigation comes to the conclusion that it cannot make a judgement without knowing whether a criminal offence has been committed.
  • The scandal revolves around the expensive redecoration of the flat above No.11 Downing Street, used as the prime minister's private residence in London. While Johnson claims that he has now paid the full cost out of his own pocket, interest centres on who originally paid for the works, whether it was Johnson, the Conservative Party, a Conservative party donor, or whether the funds came from public funds.
  • The investigation at present focuses only on the Conservative Party, rather than Johnson himself, although the Electoral Commission's remit could be widened to include the PM personally.
  • The 'worst case scenario' for Johnson and the gov't would be the PM being interviewed under police caution (an unprecedented event for a sitting prime minister). In this scenario there is a significant risk that Johnson is forced from office or resigns.
  • Separately, parliamentary authorities could also demand Johnson apologise to the House of Commons or suspend him from parliament for several days if it is deemed that he did not declare a political donation in his Register of Interests.
  • The exposing of the flat redecoration issue comes as the PM also deals with alleged comments from him in October 2020 stating that he would rather 'bodies pile high' than order another COVID-19 lockdown (denied by the PM). Both of these come at the time of an extremely bitter and public falling out between the PM and his former senior advisor Dominic Cummings.
