Poland Strikes Revised Grain Transit Deal With Ukraine

POLAND
  • Poland said it will allow for the transit of Ukrainian grain through its territory from Friday following talks with Kyiv. The revised deal stipulates that grain transports will be sealed and monitored while en route to four Baltic Sea ports and other European destinations to prevent them from reaching local markets. The transit agreement was halted over the weekend after supply bottlenecks and inadequate monitoring resulted in cheap Ukrainian grain flooding East European markets and depressing prices, sparking backlash from local producers. The European Commission told PAP newswire that it welcomes the adoption of a revised Polish-Ukrainian deal but continues to condemn any unilateral actions, adding that Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis will discuss the matter with East European states later today.
  • Radio Zet reports that Poland is drafting emergency plans for governing the country in the event of war. The new plan will broaden the prerogatives of the Prime Minister, allowing the head of government to "flexibly shape the composition of the system of coordinating national defence," i.e. include more state organs in the system.
  • Deputy Finance Minister Artur Sobon told Gazeta Polska that he will work on a further simplification of the tax system. The official noted that a comprehensive tax reform is one of the Ministry's priorities for 2023.
