Poland To Announce Leopard 2 Tank Delivery Today As PM Visits Kyiv-BBG

UKRAINE

Bloomberg reportsthat Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki will announce that of the first of the 14 Leopard 2 tanks pledged to Ukraine will be delivered today. Comes as Morawiecki visits Kyiv on the one-year anniversary of the launching of the Russian invasion.

  • If confirmed, then Poland would become the first country to send main battle tanks to Ukraine. A significant number of main battle tanks, with trained crews, will be required for Ukrainian forces to punch significant holes in the Russian front lines in the east and south of the country. It still appears that it could be weeks or months before this critical mass is reached.
  • At the Munich Security Conference last weekend, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz voiced his frustration with other Ukrainian allies that have yet to commit any of their stockpiles of Leopard 2 tanks. He argued that Germany had come under significant pressure to both provide its own tanks and allow the re-export of German-made Leopard 2's by other nations, only for other countries to then fail to announce how many they would send to Kyiv.
