Poll-French, German Public Support For Ukraine EU Membership Strengthens

EU

Opinion polling from YouGov shows a significant increase in French and German public support for Ukraine joining the European Union, boosted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

  • French public support for Ukraine joining the bloc has risen from net -27 to net +12 between Dec 2018 and Mar 2022. In the same period of time, net public support in Germany has risen from -17 to +16.
  • While EU membership may be something that Russia allows Ukraine to pursue, as opposed to NATO membership, there remain extremely high barriers to entry for Ukraine to join the bloc, including the Maastrict criteria on gov't finances, and standards on corruption and judicial independence. These are likely to limit the ability for a 'fast-tracking' of Ukraine's membership application, which is still likely to take several years and have no guarantee of success.
