expected news conf at 1330ET today re: corona virus outbreak, how did things
transpire back in 2002-2003 with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
outbreak? According to the CDC:
* Nov 2002: First case of atypical pneumonia reported in Guangdong province,
China. Four moths later:
* Mar 2003: WHO issues global alert for severe form of pneumonia of unknown
origin in persons from China, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. Soon after CDC activated
its Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
* By the end of 2003: Globally, WHO "received reports of SARS from 29 countries
and regions; 8,096 persons with probable SARS resulting in 774 deaths. In the
United States, eight SARS infections were documented by laboratory testing and
an additional 19 probable SARS infections were reported."
- By most accts (or all professional epidemiological accts at least) current
corona virus worse in it's virulence, mortality rate and ability to spread. If
WHO is a supervisory body w/no authority to compel what are they waiting for?
