POWER: Italian Gas Demand for Power Surges
POWER
Italian gas-fired power generation this month is on track to be the highest for any month since July 2022, with daily output in early September rising to the highest since early January.
- At the same time, combined wind and solar PV output so far this month is on track to be at the lowest since February at 5.46GW, supporting demand for gas-fired generation.
- Power demand in Italy so far this month averaged 34.6GW, up from 33.33GW in August. Power demand for all of September averaged 32.34GW in 2023 and 32.43GW in 2022.
- On a weekly basis, gas-fired generation last week – calendar week 36 - increased by 1.24GW on the week to 16GW – the highest level for any week so far this year.
- On a daily basis, gas-fired power generation surged to 18.64GW on 3 September, the highest daily average since 10 January.
- Gas-fired generation in Italy may also be supported by flows curtailments on the French border due to RTE’s export reductions and interconnector outages.
- France’s RTE is expected to reduce power exports on France’s eastern borders – Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Italy - from 2-29 September, if the value of exports exceeds 10GW vs 8GW in August, with export reductions may be applied even below the threshold.
- The French-Italian Piossasco Grande-Ile 2 interconnector went offline in an unplanned outage on 2 September, with no available capacity in the France-Italy direction until 27 September.
- Flows on the Albertville-Rondissone 1 link are also curtailed amid planned works until 30 September and at the Cornier-Montagny-Les-Anches cable until 13 September.
