PP-Vox Reach Agreement In Extremadura In Potential Sign Of Post-Election Deal

SPAIN

The centre-right People's Party (PP) and right-wing Vox have come to an agreement to form a governing coalition in the western autonomous community of Extremadura in another potential sign of what could happen at the federal level following the upcoming 23 July general election. the announcement of a coalition deal was not expected, given that regional PP head María Guardiola previously stated that “I can’t allow those who deny gender-based violence … those who are dehumanising immigrants [...] into government," referring to the right-wing nationalist Vox.

  • Under the deal Guardiola will serve as regional president, while Vox will hold the rural affairs ministry in Extremadura. There is speculation that Guardiola came under pressure from PP HQ to form a coalition, after formal agreements between PP and Vox were reached in the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands following the May 28 regional elections.
  • PM Pedro Sanchez's PSOE and other leftist parties have sought to boost turnout among their supporters by warning of the prospect of Vox driving the gov't hard to the right if they come into gov't as a junior partner to the PP, as opinion polling suggests could be the case.
