Pro-Kurdish HDP Party to Back Opposition Alliance

  • Bloomberg report that the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) will hold talks with Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the coming days and is expected to announce its support, according to people familiar with the matter, declining to be named because the discussions are private. That means the party isn’t planning to field a separate presidential candidate, they said. The HDP declined to comment.
  • The HDP is Turkey’s leading pro-Kurdish party and has been an important factor in past elections. Its decision would be a major boost for an opposition alliance that has struggled to mount an effective campaign.
  • Last week Turkey’s Kilicdaroglu said he will ‘definitely’ visit the HDP during his presidential campaign after the Turkish Constitutional Court lifted a block on the state funding of the HDP party. However, IYI Party leader Aksener ruled out the possibility of the HDP being given ministerial positions in the Opposition Alliance in exchange for the party’s support for Kilicdaroglu.
