Public Enterprises Min To Retire After Elections, Deadline For Candidate Lists Approaches

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The deadline for submitting candidate lists for the upcoming national and provincial elections to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (commonly known as IEC) expires today at 15:00GMT/17:00SAST. The ruling African National Congress (ANC) called a special meeting of its National Executive Committee (NEC) last night to finalise its lists amid heated debate on what to do with nominees facing accusations of wrongdoing. The Mail & Guardian reported that the party seemed to have failed to remove people associated with state capture from its lists.
  • Following the NEC meeting, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan announced that he would be retiring from politics after the upcoming elections. This means that he will join Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor and Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, who had earlier declared that they would resign from politics after the May 29 polls. BusinessDay reported that Pravin's decision was motivated by family matters and health.
  • The National Treasury will offer ZAR1bn of inflation-linked bonds at its weekly auction. The results will be announced at 09:30GMT/11:30SAST. Just ZAR295mn was allocated at last week's auction, with dealers placing orders for ZAR385mn of debt.
  • South Africa has returned to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), seeking a court order for Israel to take provisional measures to prevent full-scale famine in Gaza.
