Putin Confirms 2024 Presidential Run

RUSSIA

In a widely-expected move, state-run Tass reportsthat President Vladimir Putin will run for office once again in the 17 March 2024 presidential election. Given the crackdown on any effective opposition figures in Russia, the result of the election is essentially a foregone conclusion, with Putin set for another six-year term in office.

  • Putin previously served as acting president from 1999-2000, then as president from 2000-2008, and as president again from 2012 to the present day. A constitutional referendum in 2020 brought in, among other measures, new term limits for presidents, who will heretofore be restricted to two six-year terms in total.
  • The referendum was deemed to have 'reset' the counter on Putin's terms, meaning that following his almost-inevitable re-election in March, the 2024-2030 term will count as his 'first', allowing if he so chooses/is in the position to, to run again in 2030 for a term that would run until 2036.
