Q1 Industrial Disputes At Low Level, Conditions Main Cause

Industrial disputes fell in Q1 despite the increasing disparity between unions and employers on appropriate wage increases. The main cause (95%) in Q4 was related to employment conditions within enterprise bargaining rather than remuneration.

  • The number of new disputes was down 38% q/q. Total disputes fell 40% q/q but were 37% higher than a year ago. The number of employees impacted was also down sharply in Q1 with the number of working days lost 7.7k compared with 21k in Q4 but year ended estimates showed a 67.9k increase on the previous year. But the levels remain low.
  • Disputes were driven by the manufacturing – metal product sector, accounting for 28% of total working days lost.
