Qatar See Natural Gas as Vital Component of Energy Transition

LNG

Qatar’s energy minister Saad al-Kaabi sees the requirement for natural gas until well after 2050 and must go hand in hand with renewables development according to Energy Intelligence.

  • “Gas will be indispensable, especially given its reliability as a baseload source," Saad al-Kaabi
  • Renewables “cannot be the sole solution, particularly considering their intermittent nature. That's where natural gas, as a cleaner, cost-effective and ready-to-use component of energy transition, becomes vital,” he added.
  • Al-Kaabi was speaking at a conference in Tokyo with the trip potentially involving negotiations around new Qatar-Japan LNG deals following the expiry of Mitsui and Marubeni Qatargas-1 investment at the end of 2021.
  • Mideast Gulf oil and gas producers suggest that the least carbon-intensive hydrocarbons will be needed to avoid supply crunches and ensure energy security during a long low carbon energy transition.
  • Qatar has scaled up its carbon capture and storage (CCS) ambitions with plans for 11m tons per year of sequestration by 2035 as well as scaling up renewables development.
