UK: Quick update on UK parliamentary arithmetic.
- There are currently 649 MPs sitting in the House of Commons.
- The House will be back up to 650 MPs after the by-election to replace Labour
MP Paul Flynn after his death. This seat is expected to be held by Labour.
- Taking out the Speaker, Deputy Speakers and Sinn Fein, there would be 639
voting MPs.
- This means 320 MPs are needed for a majority.
- The Tories have 316 MPs (exc. Speaker, Dep Speaker).
- DUP has 10 MPs.
- So Tory/DUP have 326 MPs between them.
- If the Tories lose 7 MPs, the Tory/DUP group will have less than the 320 MPs
needed for a majority.
- Headlines are suggested 3 Tory MPs could defect ahead of PMQs today, so only 4
more would be needed for a lack of majority.
