Ramaphosa Submits Climate Transition Plans Worth R1.5 Trillion to Developed Nations

  • The government have formally handed over their climate transition plans to international partners at the COP27 summit in Egypt. Ramaphosa’s plans are seen including pledges and financing of as much as R1.5 trillion in a bid to shift the country away from coal.
  • The President confirmed yesterday that he has responded to section 89 impeachment proceedings in line with the deadline set out by the independent panel. The President again denied any wrongdoing, with the independent panel now withdrawing to assess evidence before making a recommendation to the National Assembly.
  • EWN report that two of the ANC’s three leagues have now endorsed Ramaphosa for a second term at the ANC’s elective conference in December. The Veterans league backed the incumbent during a Monday night sitting.
  • Outages prompted by the Koeberg plant regeneration project will be the equivalent of 1,860MW of capacity being knocked offline – effectively stage 2 load-shedding for the next eight months, according to a report compiled by Eskom.
  • The PSA union representing 200,000 civil servants are to strike on Thursday having failed to reach a wage agreement with government negotiators. The industrial action will directly impact ports of entry into South Africa.
