Free AccessRamaphosa To Deliver His Annual SONA Tonight
- South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver his State of the Nation Address from Cape Town at 19:00SAST/17:00GMT. The leader is expected to touch upon the unprecedented energy crisis, which has seen South Africa endure more than 100 consecutive days of power outages. Ramaphosa could declare a national state of disaster, after the ruling ANC party backed the idea during its most recent strategy meeting. The measure would allow officials to cut red tape and facilitate spending on expanding Eskom's generation capacity. Ramaphosa's administration is under pressure to find quick solutions to the problem, as persistent blackouts meet with an intensifying public backlash. Weighing in on the debate about the consequences of the energy crisis, the Treasury warned yesterday that continued electricity rationing could ignite civil unrest.
- South Africa's state-owned logistics company Transnet is planning to reduce its freight rail network by more than a third and focus on delivering more profitable cargo loads. Alongside prolonger load-shedding, Transnet's troubles have been key in constraining growth.
- Mining production and manufacturing output data will cross the wires later this morning. Both are expected to have contracted on an annual basis in December.
