MNI BRIEF:ECB Needs Data To Confirm Disinflation Trend-Lagarde
ECB to analyse incoming data ahead of policy decisions to confirm inflation trends.
The European Central Bank will need data "at each and every point in time" to confirm a disinflationary trend, ECB President Christine Lagarde said Thursday.
Pushed on what data the ECB would need to cut again, Lagarde said she wouldn't "volunteer" that the central bank had moved into a “dialing back” phase of interest rate reductions, but stressed the ECB’s data-dependence.
While there is no "perfect synchronicity" between the Governing Council meetings and the publication of data," she added, with one round of monthly data to become available by the July meeting and three months’ worth by September. (see MNI SOURCES: ECB To Hold In July, Signal Likely September Cut)
ECB Vice President Luis de Guindos will discuss the projections and the thinking behind the latest decision at an MNI Connect livestream event on June 12. Registration for the event is here
