Right-Wing Sweden Democrats Gaining, Now In 2nd Ahead Of 11 Sep Election

SWEDEN

Latest opinion polling ahead of the 11 September general election shows the right-wing populist Sweden Democrats continuing to gain support, with pollsters now consistently putting Jimmie Akesson's party in second place nationally, ahead of the centre-right Moderates, the current main opposition.

  • Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson's centre-left Social Democrats remain the most popular party by some distance, but the balance of power post-election is likely to rely on the seat totals of smaller parties from the left, centre, and right of the Swedish political landscape.
  • Sifo poll: Social Democrats (S): 30% (-1), Sweden Democrats (SD): 19% (+1), Moderates (M): 17% (-1), Left Party (V): 7% (-1), Christian Democrats (KD): 7% (+1), Centre Party (C): 6%, Green Party (MP): 6% (+1), Liberals (L): 5% (-1). +/- vs. 19-21 August 2022. Fieldwork: 20-22 August 2022. Sample size: 2,194
  • SKOP poll: S: 28% (-4), SD: 19% (+2), M: 18% (-1), C: 9% (+3), V: 9, L: 6%, MP: 6% (+2), KD: 5% (-1). +/- vs. 8 - 11 July 2022. Fieldwork: 18 - 22 August 2022. Sample size: 1,106
  • Polling indicates the parties likely to support Andersson's gov't and those in opposition running collectively neck-and-neck.
  • In the event the centre-right/right bloc of parties (Sweden Democrats, Moderates, libertarian Liberals, conservative Christian Democrats) emerge from the election with a majority of seats and the SD as the largest party in that bloc it is unclear whether Akesson would demand the PM's office or another senior gov't posting.
  • Previously, Moderate leader Ulf Kristersson ruled out working with SD in gov't, but did not deny the prospect of a confidence-and-supply agreement with the right-wingers.
