Ruling Coalition Deliberates Strategy On Revamping Constitutional Tribunal

  • Onet reports that the ruling coalition will today decide on its strategy of revamping the politicised Constitutional Tribunal. The relevant legislative package is ready, but has not yet been submitted for debate in parliament. Members of the ruling coalition have suggested that they are planning to take a series of quick and effective action to "fix" the Tribunal and restore its proper functioning. Sejm Speaker Szymon Holownia yesterday said that it was unlikely that parliament would start start discussing the legislative package already at this week's session, even as some lawmakers keep pushing for dealing with the matter as soon as possible.
  • Fitch warned that the escalation in political tensions in Poland raises risks to government effectiveness, which could "complicate fiscal consolidation efforts, delay receipt of EU funds and adversely affect market sentiment, particularly if it undermined the stability and functioning of key institutions".
  • The National Bank of Poland (NBP) begins its two-day meeting on monetary policy. The decision is widely expected to be a placeholder ahead of the release of the updated macroeconomic projection in March, with rates seen unchanged this week.
