Russia Shows Signs of Shifting Focus as Stalemate Persists in Kyiv

RUSSIA
  • RUSSIAN MILITARY TO FOCUS ON `FULL LIBERATION' OF DONBAS: IFX
  • RUSSIAN DEFENCE MINSITRY: WE WERE CONSIDERING TWO OPTIONS FOR OUR SPECIAL OPERATION, ONE WITHIN DONBAS SEPARATIST REPUBLICS, OR THE OTHER ON WHOLE TERRITORY OF UKRAINE - IFAX
  • THE MAIN TARGETS OF RUSSIA'S FIRST PHASE OF OPERATIONS IN UKRAINE HAVE BEEN COMPLETED, ACCORDING TO THE RUSSIAN DEFENCE MINISTRY - TASS.
  • Interesting comments here from Russia RE focus on the Donbas and phases of the conflict. Seems the focus is coming off Kyiv with the military facing so many difficulties in taking the capital with major troop casualties, low morale and equipment loss.
  • Comms from Russia on negotiations have become notably quiet this week, and may shift to reflect a change in tact to focus on securing separatist regions as a ‘victory’ for Putin to take home to the people to avoid losing too much face politically.
  • The other avenue is greater escalation via chemical weaponry and as a last resort nuclear, but the Kremlin has downplayed the latter saying it would only go nuclear if it were facing an existential threat.
  • Next week may be a critical juncture for the conflict, and will be interesting to gauge whether Russia pulls back from its push for Kyiv or ramps up its offensive.
