S. Africa Observes Public Holiday, Eskom Warns That Grid Remains Under Pressure

  • The EFF's "national shutdown" yesterday proved to be a day of mostly peaceful protests amid heightened presence of law enforcement agencies across South Africa. The police said it arrested more than 550 people for violence, attempted looting, damage to infrastructure and intimidation, but there was no major unrest. The EFF said that it considered its protest action to be a success, while ANC Secretary General Fikle Mbalula called it a "flop."
  • Although South Africa is enjoying temporary reprieve from load-shedding, Eskom warned that the grid remains "under severe pressure" and asked customers to switch off non-essential appliances. TimesLive reported today that the utility's lawyers are expected to argue in the Pretoria high court on Wednesday against applying power rationing exemptions to institutions like schools and hospitals that it would increase the risk of grid collapse.
