Sao Paulo Mourns Death Of Mayor, Bruno Covas

  • Bruno Covas, the mayor of Sao Paulo, died of cancer on Sunday, according to the press office of Brazil's biggest city. He was 41. Covas, a grandson of a governor of Sao Paulo state, was elected as state congressman and later to the national congress before becoming mayor in 2018. He was re-elected as mayor last year.
    • His party, the Brazilian Social Democracy Party, mourned his death, describing Covas as one of its ″most promising and brilliant leaders" and praising his efforts to build new schools, hospitals and housing for Sao Paulo. (ABC)
  • Supreme Court Judge Ricardo Lewandowski granted an habeas corpus to former Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello, allowing him to remain silent at the Senate's inquiry on the govt's handling of the pandemic, G1 website reports without saying how it obtained the information.
    • Pazuello is investigated for alleged negligence during the pandemic. (BBG)
  • Brazil's Health Ministry confirmed signature of a second contract with Pfizer/BioNTech to acquire another 100m doses of the vaccine against Covid-19. The additional 100m doses are expected to arrive between Sept. and Dec.
