Secretary of State Blinken continues his China strategy speech.
- A livestream of the speech can be followed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VA3NS9BZong
- Blinken's speech doesn't reveal much new information. The key pillars of the new strategy is pursuing domestic tech investment and supply chain resilience in key pieces of Democrat legislation: Bipartisan infrastructure, America Completes Act.
- Blinken: 'But we will defend and strengthen international law, agreements, and principles and institutions that maintain peace and security.'
- Blinken: 'China is a global power with extraordinary reach. Home to some of the world's largest tech companies. It has rapidly moderised its military and announced its ambition to create a sphere of influence in the Indo-pacific and to become the world's leading power.'
- Blinken says the US cannot trust China to change this trajectory and therefore: 'We will shape the strategic environment around Beijing to create an open and inclusive international system.'
- Blinken says Biden's China strategy can be summed up in three words: 'Invest, align, compete.'
- 'Invest in foundations of state at home: competitiveness, innovation, democracy.'
- 'Align efforts with network of allies.'
- 'We will compete with china to defend our interests and build our vision for the future.'
- Blinken says that the basis of the China strategy will be developing industry in the US. He says that the bipartisan innovation act, passed last year, is the first step.
- He says that the industrial strategy starts with research and investment. He says that the US used to rank first in tech research and development but is now ninth.
