Sen Min Ldr McConnell Opposes 6 Jan Commission, Making Law Passage Unlikely

US

Politico breaking and other outlets now reporting that Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has come out against the proposed 9/11-style bipartisan independent commission to investigate the 6 January Capitol riots in a major blow to the prospect of the commission being created.

  • On the Senate floor, McConnell stated that "I have made the decision to oppose the House Democrats slanted [proposal]...There is, has been, and will continue to be no shortage of robust investigations by two separate branches of the federal government"
  • "I've been an outspoken critic about all the episodes of political violence that our nation has seen over the past year. I support the strong existing investigations and justice for any American who has broken the law."
  • With McConnell seeking to block the passage of a law that would create the commission, it appears a Republican filibuster would be enough to hold up the vote unless 10 Republican senators vote in favour of cloture (an unlikely prospect).
