Senate To Hold Plenary Vote On Pension Bill, Unemployment Rate Holds Steady In Feb

CZECHIA
  • Two key Senate Committees did not support the government's contentious proposal to reduce pension growth, showing that even some of the ruling coalition lawmakers have doubts about the proposed legislation, which bodes ill for the plenary vote expected to take place later today. If the upper house refuses to back the draft bill today, the legislation will return to the lower house, where it will again be filibustered by the opposition. If the Senate votes in favour of the bill, it will still need the signature of newly elected President Petr Pavel. While his veto can be overriden by an absolute majority in the lower house, the government is rushing to approve the legislation by March 22, in order for it to be effective already this year.
  • Czechia's unemployment rate among people aged 15-65 stayed unchanged at 3.9% in February, matching the consensus forecast. The number of vacancies rose by about 2,000 from the previous month.
  • The Cabinet meets this afternoon, on the agenda are changes to the regulations on capital markets and the insurance industry.
