Softer Exports To Asia Driven By Commodities

  • Exports to China remain solid at a steady growth rate. The data is volatile and the 3-month annual growth rate in April was 22.2%. Exports to Japan weakened considerably and remain soft to Korea and India. But shipments to NZ and Indonesia were the bright spot up 10.2% y/y and 35.5% respectively.
  • Commodity exports were weak on both quantity and prices. Iron ore export volumes fell 11.3% m/m in April with the unit values down 2.5%. Volumes were particularly weak to China falling 11.9%. Coking coal quantities fell 0.6% m/m with unit values -29% m/m with weakness seen across most countries. Natural gas export volumes fell 6.2% with unit values down 10%.
