SOUTH AFRICA: SARB Governor Speaks At Conference

SOUTH AFRICA
  • African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Fikile Mbalula told Daily Maverick that his party would only respond to the ultimatum issued by the Democratic Alliance (DA) to help reinstate Cilliers Brink as Tshwane Mayor next week. This comes after DA Federal Chairperson Helen Zille wrote a letter to the ANC, warning that the ouster of Brink was "seismic" for the government of national unity (GNU) and undermines negotiations on a "stability pact" in South African municipalities. The clock is ticking on the election of the new Tshwane Mayor, with four candidates currently in the game.
  • Business Unity South Africa commissioned research which showed that South Africa's GDP growth could exceed +3% Y/Y by the end of 2025 if the GNU expedites reforms, mobilises private sector investment, and fixes operational issues at Eskom and Transnet. The IMF sees South Africa's growth at +1.2% Y/Y in 2025, while the SARB pencilled in +1.5%.
  • Governor Lesetja Kganyago will speak at the opening of the South African Reserve Bank Payments Conference at 08:05BST/09:05SAST.
