Spanish PV to Surge to New Records During Peak Periods in Coming Months

POWER

Spain’s PV output is anticipated to swell to fresh records during peak periods over the coming months, as Spain's solar production capacity hit a new high in 2024 despite the slowdown of installations, according to Reuters.

  • Total solar production from PV plants operated by utilities through 28 May 2024 has climbed 13% higher than during the same period in 2023, according to LSEG.
  • And so far this month solar output is up 26.3% on the year.
  • Spain's PV output more than doubles during June, July and August as is generated during winter months, data from energy think tank Ember shows.
  • As a result, Spanish PV generation could exceed demand for some periods, pushing down power prices in the region.
  • The surplus power could also be exported to France and Portugal, but this may be limited due to French nuclear output and Portugal’s increasing PV capacity – adding additional weight on Spanish power prices and decreasing the capture rates of regional PV operators.
