SPD Scandal Leaves Door Open For Greens In Berlin Election

GERMANY

The centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) has suffered a significant setback before state elections in the German capital Berlin, due to take place on the same day as the federal election on 26 September, with the party's lead candidate Franziska Giffey being accused of plagarising her PhD thesis.

  • Giffey has stated that she will continue to run and has posted an explanation of her side of the case. However, her party (currently the largest in the Berlin Abgeordnetenhaus ) is already trailing the Greens - and in some polls the centre-right CDU as well.
