'Sunak Bounce' In Polls For Conservatives, Still Trail Labour By Wide Margin

UK

Latest UK opinion polling shows a bump in support for the governing Conservatives following the appointment of Rishi Sunak as prime minister. However, the party still trails the main opposition Labour party by a substantial margin that, if reflected in a general election, would result in a landslide win for Sir Keir Starmer's Labour.

  • YouGov poll: LAB: 51% (-5), CON: 23% (+4), LDEM: 9% (-1), REFORM: 6% (+1), SNP: 5% (+1), GREENS: 4%, PC: 1%. +/- vs. 20-21 Oct. Fieldwork: 25-26 October 2022
  • Savanta ComRes poll: LAB: 51% (-1), CON: 25% (+3), LDEM: 8% (-3), SNP: 4%, GREENS: 2% +/- vs. 14-16 Oct. Fieldwork: 21-23 October 2022, Sample size: 1,996
  • The increase in support comes from record-low polling for the Conservatives at the end of the short-lived gov't of PM Liz Truss. Should the increase in polling for the Conservatives be sustained it could shore up Sunak's position within the party.
  • However, a snap election - called for by the opposition and backed by a sizable section of the public according to polls - remains a very unlikely prospect. The latest a vote can take place is January 2025.
