Supertanker Carrying Urals Heads to Caribbean: Bloomberg

OIL

A VLCC carrying Russian Urals crude is headed for the Caribbean following an STS in Greece, indicating that Russia’s supply chain is becoming more complicated, according to Bloomberg.

  • Bloomberg said that it is rare for Urals to move to the Caribbean, and it is unclear the reason behind the voyage.
  • The Ligera, a VLCC, received about 1m bbl of Urals from the Suezmax Jula A from Jan. 28-30 in Southern Greece. It also added 0.7m bbl of Urals from Nautilus in the same location.
  • STS transfers involving Urals have been on the rise after declining the end of 2023.
  • The reason for increasing STS transfers is unclear but could be connected to growing shipping insecurity from the Red Sea and tightened sanctions enforcement on Russian oil.
  • Bloomberg noted that the ship may change its destination and still head to Asia as it is still in the Mediterranean.
