Support For Trump Steady As Judge Set May 20, 2024, Trail Date

US

US District Court Judge Aileen Cannon, the judge presiding over the trial of former President Donald Trump for his mishandling of classified government documents, has set a trial date of May 20, 2024.

  • The trial date sets up the public and highly politicised event right in the middle of campaign season for the 2024 presidential election. Should Trump secure the Republican nomination the trial will be uncharted ground for a presidential nominee - managing a campaign while simultaneously appearing in court on federal charges.
  • Comes as a new survey from the Pew Research Center finds that Trump’s favourability has remained “largely stable” over the past year, albeit with a moderate dip in Republic support, despite his legal challenges.
  • Trump is currently under indictment on charges in two jurisdictions and may soon face a further two indictments, one from a Georgia prosecutor and a second federal indictment from Department of Justice Special Council Jack Smith – both on charges related to allegedly attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election result.
