Support For Voice Declines & With It For The Labor Party

A new Newspoll commissioned by The Australian is showing a further drop in support for the Voice and with it for the Labor Party who has proposed it. There is some commentary that PM Albanese’s political future may be linked with the result of the referendum which takes place on Saturday October 14. Results should be known that evening.

  • Those intending to vote Yes to the proposal has fallen to 34% down 2pp, a new low for this poll. Those going to vote No rose 2pp to 58%.Undecideds make up 8%. The 18-34 year old age group had previously been the only one to show support for the Voice above 50% but in this latest poll it has now fallen below that level for the first time at 46% with those planning to vote No at 49%. University-educated voters supporting the amendment also fell below 50% for the first time, according to The Australian.
  • In terms of voting intentions if a federal election was held, the incumbent Labor Party fell 1pp to 34%, its lowest since the May 2022 vote, the opposition Liberal/Nationals were steady on 36%, Other rose 1pp to 13% and the Greens +1pp to 12%.
  • PM Albanese also saw a deterioration in his approval rating. Satisfaction with his work fell 2pp to 45%, the lowest since he became PM. He remains the preferred PM but the gap with opposition leader Dutton narrowed further this month.
