Swiss Hydro Stock Switch to Surplus to Average

ELECTRICITY

Swiss hydropower reserves increased quicker last week by 2.8 percentage points to 87.4% of capacity, or 7.78TWh, as of 25 September, switching to a surplus to the five-year and long-term averages, BFE data show.

  • Hydro stocks switched to a surplus of 1.9 percentage points to the five-year average last week, compared to a deficit of 0.8 points the week prior. Levels also moved 0.5 points above the long-term average – since 1997 – compared with a deficit of 2.6 points the week before.
  • Reserves saw a weekly increase of 2.8 percentage points, after no change in the week prior, driven by high precipitation in hydro intensive regions.
  • The Alpine hydrological balance for Switzerland, France, Germany and Austria stood at a deficit as of 22 September and was eyed to further decline in the coming weeks according to Bloomberg data.
  • Forecasts for little precipitation in the region of Sion – canton Valais where 45% of all hydro reserves are stored – could limit inflows into reserves this week.
