Swiss Hydro Stocks Narrow Deficit to 5-Year Average

Swiss hydropower reserves rose at the quickest pace in three weeks at 3.1 percentage points last week to 81.9% of capacity as of 28 August, driven by higher precipitation, BFE data show.

  • Stocks narrowed the deficit to the five-year average to 1.8 percentage points, compared with 3.2 percentage points a week earlier.
  • Hydro reserves also narrowed the deficit to the long-term average – since 1997 – by 1.3 percentage points on the week to 3 percentage points.
  • Overall hydropower output last week showed an increase, partly because a dip in nuclear generation. Generation from hydro reservoirs rose by 427MW week on week to 2.05GW, Entso-E data show.
  • High precipitation at the end of the week supported inflows into reserves.
  • Latest weather forecasts suggested high precipitation in Sion – canton Valais where 45% of the reserves are located – at the beginning of this week, which could further support stocks to rise this week.
