Swiss Hydro Stocks Widen Surplus to 5-Year Average to Highest Since June

Swiss hydropower reserves were stable on the week at 86.5% as of 20 November, widening the surplus to the five-year average to the highest level since early June, BFE data showed.

  • The surplus to the five-year average widened to 5.8 percentage points last week, up from 3.6 points the week prior.
  • Stocks also widened the surplus to the long-term average since 1997 to 10 points, up from 7.2 points the week prior and the highest level since mid May.
  • Hydropower output rose last week. Output from reservoirs edged higher by 67MW on the week to 1.3GW, Entso-E data showed.
  • Forecasts suggest little precipitation in the region of Sion – in the hydro-intensive canton of Valais – with temperatures below zero limiting inflows into reserves.
