Switzerland Aims to Boost Gas Security

ENERGY

Switzerland has agreed with its natural gas sector to boost storage capacity in neighbouring countries ahead of winter the cabinet said today.

  • Switzerland does not have its own gas storage infrastructure and is seeking to build supplies with neighbours to minimise the impact of any issues if Russia turns off supplies.
  • This physical reserve is intended to cover 15% - around 6 TWh - of Switzerland's annual gas consumption of around 35 TWh.
  • In addition to regular procurements, 6 TWh are to be purchased via options for non-Russian gas in France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, which can be accessed at short notice for a fixed fee.
  • An energy task force is set to report on how to manage Swiss gas reserves by mid-June.
