/TAIWAN: China Steps Up Military Activity In Fujian

Media outlets/social media accounts carry reports of China stepping up military readiness in Fujian province located opposite of Taiwan:

  • Taiwan's Central News Agency reports that China has implemented airspace traffic control over Fujian, with a large number of commercial flights cancelled as a result.
  • Footage of the PLA moving heavy military equipment in/around Fujian is doing the rounds in social media (unverified as of yet).
  • The FT reports that "military units across the PLA's Southern Theatre Command, which is in charge of the South China Sea and some Taiwan-related missions, have entered a status of high alert."
  • Note that China's military is conducting naval exercises in the South China Sea from August 2 to 6 and a live-fire drill in the Bohai Sea from August 1 to 4.
  • Chinese outspoken nationalist commentator Hu Xijin tweeted the following: "based on what I know, in response to Pelosi's possible visit to Taiwan, Beijing has formulated a series of countermeasures, including military actions."
